Incident: Sheriff's homicide detectives were very familiar with Mariano Perez, 24, long before they showed up to investigate his death. Detectives put together a case under the theory Perez murdered elderly prominent business man, Jakov Dulcich, in broad daylight this past spring. Ultimately, 11 out of 12 jurors found Perez not guilty of that crime. It seemed like things were looking up for him. But less than a month after his release, the same investigators who once called him a murderer are now looking for his killer. Deputy Public Defender Lexi Blythe maintained the murder case against Perez was bogus. Blythe said law enforcement arrested Perez after minimal investigation. Detectives and prosecutors never said what they thought Perez's motive would've been for killing Dulcich. One of the more memorable parts of Perez's trial was when an eyewitness to the shooting looked at Perez in court and said he was not the shooter. Perez was released from jail November 5. Blythe said he was in good spirits and never seemed to fear for his safety. Perez's body was found off a stretch of Highway 155 outside Delano. The coroner determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Incident: People began calling for help after a truck veered off Highway 99 and crashed through the barbwire fence. KCSO investigators said by the time a CHP officer arrived, the driver, bloody and injured, was walking on Highway 99 holding a knife. The first responding officer reported that driver, Felipe Perez, was acting erraticly and was clearly hurt. investigators said he refused to respond to the officer's commands to stop, both in english and spanish. KCSO said the CHP officer pointed out to Perez that he was visibly injured and the officer wanted to get him help. Investigators said Perez didn't listen and continued to dart through traffic, causing cars to come to screeching halts on the busy freeway to avoid hitting him. The CHP officer got out of his patrol car and again tried to get Perez to stop. KCSO said Perez began aggressively approaching the officer with the knife, so the officer to open fire. Investigators said it's unknown if Perez was actually hit at this point, because he hopped over the barrier, darting into traffic on southbound 99 where officers say he tried to carjack several vehicles. The officer said Perez again began to come toward him with the knife, causing him to fire his handgun at the man for the second time. This time, Perez was shot and killed. It was later determined Perez had several stab wounds to his chest that officers say appeared to be self-inflicted. The officer who shot Perez has not been named, but the CHP said he's been with the department for 22 years.

Incident: Family members confirmed to 17 News preliminary DNA testing indicates an arm found in the Kern River in August belonged to Holsonbake. Holsonbake went missing March 23. A month later, Baylee Despot, 21, was last seen by family. Between the two disappearances, on April 8, James Kulstad was shot and killed. Law enforcement treated the cases separately until the victims’ mothers realized the three knew each other. The mothers labeled the victims the “Bakersfield 3” and urged detectives to investigate possible connections. On Aug. 18 a group of young people was playing in the Kern River near Hart Park discovered a bag weighed down with rocks. Inside the bag was a human arm, from the forearm to the hand. Though the bag has been on the bottom of the river, it was moving with the current, so investigators say it could've been dropped anywhere upstream. The results came from a private company hired by the Kern County Coroner’s Office that conducts accelerated DNA testing. That testing is considered reliable but it is not as conclusive as court room DNA. Holsonbake was last seen within the city limits, so his case was investigated by the Bakersfield Police Department, which also is handling the shooting death of Kulstad. Despot was last seen in an unincorporated area of the county, so her case has been investigated by sheriff’s deputies. Now, with confirmation that Holsonbake is a homicide victim, the cases will be consolidated and the BPD detectives will take the lead.

Police said one person was hit by that shot and received minor wounds. Then police say another person at the event pulled out a legally owned handgun, and fired several rounds at Viera. Our photographers captured what appears to be a sawed-off shotgun next to Viera's body after the scene. The man who shot Viera ultimately called the police department to cooperate with the investigation. Police said they interviewed him extensively but did not arrest him in the end, stating "it does not appear future charges are forthcoming." Judicial Status: Charges filed
Incident: Ramon Angel Reyes-Chavez, 2, was laid to rest at Greenlawn Funeral Home Southwest, as newly released police reports detail the investigation into the boy's death, allegedly at the hands of his own mother and her boyfriend. Ayled Chavez, 19, and her boyfriend, Kaleb Kessinger, 20, are accused of murdering the boy, whose body was found buried April 26 off a Kern River Canyon trail. The day before, April 25, police responded to a call from Chavez regarding what she said was a kidnapping. She told investigators her son was taken from her by two men in a black GMC Yukon near the intersection of South Union Avenue and Panama Lane, according to Bakersfield Police Department documents. After being questioned by officers, Chavez admitted she made the story up, even placing a bag full of unused diapers on the side of the road, police said. She then allegedly told police Kessinger had struck the boy with a car door, injuring him. She said on Tuesday, April 24 she had returned from a dinner engagement with a friend to Kessinger's home in Northwest Bakersfield, where she found the boy in bed, injured but breathing. She told officers she tried to convince Kessinger to let her take the child to a hospital, but said he threatened to kill her and hurt her family if she took the boy, according to the reports. She then said Kessinger changed his mind, and they began to take her son to the hospital, but he died on the way. Chavez said they then returned to the home, left the dead child in a vehicle, and went to sleep, according to police. The next day, she and Kessinger took the boy's body into the wilderness, first leaving the boy unburied before returning later in the day to bury him, police said. After responding to the false kidnapping report that night, officers, along with Chavez, traveled to Kessinger's residence. When they approached, Kessinger took off in a black BMW sedan, leading officers on a high-speed chase, police said. Kessinger crashed the vehicle a few miles away, but escaped police custody. Chavez then agreed to lead police to the boy's body, taking investigators south on Highway 99 early in the morning on Thursday, April 26 toward Santa Clarita, as she said she remembered seeing Six Flags Magic Mountain during the trip, according to police documents. After realizing they were not in the right area, Chavez then led officers North to Highway 178 and into the Kern River Canyon, where they discovered the burial site off a nearby dirt trail. The next day, April 27, Kessinger was arrested at the Travelodge on Oak Street. Officers entered Kessinger's room without announcing their presence, as they had evidence Kessinger was armed. They found Kessinger lying in bed, with his hands underneath the sheets, according to police. Officers told Kessinger to put his hands up, but said he repeatedly refused their commands and did not raise his hands. Police then used a stun gun on Kessinger multiple times and struck him with batons until he complied, police said. Once in police custody, Kessinger denied harming the boy in any way. He said he only took off when police approached him on April 25 because of a prior weapons arrest, according to documents. The documents also say police discovered multiple splatters of blood and blood stains on furniture and walls at Kessinger's home, as well as dried blood and bandages at the burial site of the child. Both Chavez and Kessinger have pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
